A Flickering in the Midday Silver

Beyond the pane
a glimmer,
barely perceived
yet still it draws my gaze.

A flickering in the midday silver.
A calling from me to you,
who is always leaving.

The series In the Midday Silver emerged from a period of profound loss. In the spring of 2024, I lost both my father and my brother within weeks of each other, one death was expected, the other one not, In the aftermath I turned to my practice, writing and making photographs, as a way of finding ground.

Through the making of these images, and the connection I found with my subjects through portraiture, I began to look outward, opening my eyes once more to the world's persistent beauty, to its small offerings and flickerings of light. In that act of attention, I found a means of reconnection and room to breathe; time to sit with the loss, without being consumed by it. The work became an antidote to grief.

In the Midday Silver proceeds from the belief that the world, even in its darkest seasons, continues to present itself, and that when it does, paying attention can be its own form of healing. These are images made in that spirit: in the spirit of beginning again.

The images are available as archival pigment prints on Awagami Bizan handmade paper with deckled edge in the following editions:
